Mycophenolic acid (MPA) was identified as an inhibitor of syncytium formation during the screening of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) entry inhibitors. MPA is a well-known inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase and anti-HIV activity has

We searched human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) entry inhibitors and found a novel anti-HIV protein, actinohivin (AH), in a culture filtrate of the newly discovered genus actinomycete Longispora albida gen. nov., sp. nov. This paper deals with the mec

Blocking human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) entry into target cells is an important goal of HIV and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) therapies. We have searched for anti-HIV substances from microorganisms using a syncytium formation assay s

A set of genes (SWI1, SWI2/SNF2, SWI3, SNF5 and SNF6) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae are required for transcription of a variety of yeast genes. It was recently reported that the mammalian glucocorticoid receptor failed to activate transcription when tr

Various lectins have attracted attention as potential microbicides to prevent HIV transmission. Their capacity to bind glycoproteins has been suggested as a means to block HIV binding and entry into susceptible cells. The previously undescribed lecti

A phenalenone compound, atrovenetinone methyl acetal, was isolated from a culture broth of Penicillium sp. FKI-1463 as an HIV-1 integrase inhibitor, and it showed anti-HIV activity in vitro. HIV-1 integrase inhibition and anti-HIV activity of two oth

The first step in cellular entry of HIV involves binding of the viral envelope glycoprotein complex (gp120/gp41) to specific receptor molecules on the target cells. The cell-cell fusion (syncytium formation) between env expressing cells and CD4+ cell

Syncytium-inducing variants of the HIV-1 virus are correlated with poor diagnosis and rapid disease progression. We have recently discovered a novel anti-HIV protein, referred to as actinohivin, that inhibits syncytium formation. Here we describe the
