Abstract Excess reactive nitrogen (Nr), including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3), contributes strongly to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution in Europe, posing challenges to public health. Designing cost-effective Nr control roadma

Several UV data products derived from satellite measurements, 1-D and 3-D radiative transfer modeling are compared with high-quality ground-based measurements. Data products include the UV index, erythemally weighted daily dose and spectrally resolve

Despite continuous improvement during recent decades, state of the art global chemistry-climate models (CCMs) are still showing biases compared to observational data, illustrating remaining difficulties and challenges in the simulation of atmospheric

To estimate the effect of vegetation stress and changes in biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions on urban ozone (O3) levels we perform a systematic, observation-based analysis of the relationship between formaldehyde (HCHO) mixing ratio

Rising greenhouse gases (GHG) and decreasing anthropogenic ozone-depleting substances (ODS) are the main drivers of the stratospheric climate evolution in the 21st century. However, the coupling between stratospheric composition, radiation and dynami

We analyse the evolution of surface ozone in Austria for 1990–2019 and investigate effects of changes in precursor emissions and climate warming. Our results show that ozone burdens remain a health problem despite reductions in precursor emissions.

When orographic gravity waves (OGWs) break, they dissipate their momentum and energy and thereby influence the thermal and dynamical structure of the atmosphere. This OGW forcing mainly takes place in the middle atmosphere. It is zonally asymmetric a

In the extratropical atmosphere, Rossby waves (RWs) and internal gravity waves (GWs) propagating from the troposphere mediate a coupling with the middle atmosphere by influencing the dynamics herein. In the current generation chemistry-climate models

We investigate terrain effects on short-wave radiation measurements at Kanzelhohe Observatory (KSO), a mountainous radiation monitoring site in the Austrian Southern Alps, using three-dimensional (3-D) radiative transfer (RT) modeling and observation

While capabilities in urban climate modeling have substantially increased in recent decades, the interdependency of changes in environmental surface properties and human (dis)comfort have only recently received attention. The open-source solar long-w
