The motion of a dumbbell-shaped body (a pair of massive points connected with each other by a weightless rod along which the elevator, i.e., a third point, is moving according to a given law) in an attractive Newtonian central field is considered. In

Axially loaded cylindrical continuous shells collapse either globally like a rod (Euler buckling), or locally (local shell wall buckling), depending on the ratio of the length of the shell over the diameter [1]. There are many published investigation

Tethered satellite systems that is two or more satellites in orbit connected by thin long cables, pose a number of challenging problems in mechanics concerning modeling and derivation of the equations of motion and in applied mathematics, concerning

Two aerodynamically excited pendula are considered as a simple example of two linearly coupled, self sustained mechanical oscillators, modelled by two coupled Van-der-Pol equations. The considered mechanical application admits of a systematic survey

Tethered satellite systems (TSS) pose quite challenging problems concerning their modelling, derivation of the equations of motion, numerical simulation of their dynamics, deciding on stability of relative equilibria provided the system moves on a ci

One of the most important operations during a tethered satellite system mission is the deployment of a subsatellite from a spaceship. We restrict to the simple, but practically important case that the system is moving on a circular Keplerian orbit ar

The sky-hook, that is a string forming a connection from the surface of the Earth to a satellite in geostationary orbit, which may be used as track for an Earth to space elevator, is an old dream of mankind, originating about 100 years ago in Russia.

The deployment of a subsatellite from a mother spaceship moving on a circular orbit is a delicate operation for a tethered satellite system because this process leads to an unstable motion with respect to the stable radial relative equilibrium of suc

We study the existence and stability of the relative equilibria of systems of two satellites joined by a tether. Since tethers used in practice are very stiff we consider a stiff tether as a perturbation of an inextensible tether. We show that the eq
