The structure of the hexagonal phase of NaYF 4 shows two crystallographic sites of C 3h symmetry for Nd 3+ ions incorporated in this host and a detailed spectroscopic study of NaYF 4 :Nd 3+ leads to the energy level scheme of Nd 3+ ions in each site.

Laser action in Pr3+ has been observed in several hosts as well as for several different transitions.(1-3) Kaminskii et al have in addition reported flashlamp pumped laser action in several fluoride crystals, among these BaY2F8 and LiLuF4(4,5).
