Arctic sea ice is diminishing with climate warming1 at a rate unmatched for at least 1,000 years2. As the receding ice pack raises commercial interest in the Arctic3, it has become more variable and mobile4, which increases safety risks to maritime u

Sea ice thickness is a key parameter in the polar climate and ecosystem. Thermodynamic and dynamic processes alter the sea ice thickness. The Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition provided a unique

Light transmission through sea ice is a critical process for energy partitioning at the polaratmosphere‐ice‐ocean boundary. Transmission of sunlight strongly impacts sea ice melting by absorption,as well as heat deposition, and primary productivi

Sea ice is an important transport vehicle for gaseous, dissolved and particulate matter in the Arctic Ocean. Due to the recently observed acceleration in sea ice drift, it has been assumed that more matter is advected by the Transpolar Drift from sha

We combine satellite data products to provide a first and general overview of the sea-ice conditions along the MOSAiC drift and a comparison with previous years. We find that the MOSAiC drift was around 25 % faster than the climatological mean drift,
