In dune slacks in The Netherlands, a decline of rare mesotrophic basiphilous plant species and their plant communities has been observed in combination with an increase of more productive systems with common, taller acidophilous plant species. This h

Rainfall experiments have been conducted in the laboratory in order to assess the hydrological response of top soils very susceptible to surface sealing and containing rock fragments in different positions with respect to the soil surface. For a give

This paper investigates the effects of mowing and sod removal on vegetation, soil mesofauna and soil profile, and the restoration of these features in the years following sod removal. The sampling site is located in a primary wet dune slack in the no

In general, it is accepted that primary loess deposits are undifferentiated and consequently are not laminated or bedded. Redeposition by running water, after primary eolian sedimentation, can produce laminated deposits. Redeposition by splash action

The concept of a ‘niveo-aeolian influence’ on the genesis of northwest European Pleistocene aeolian sand and loess deposits has been advocated in the past both to explain the presence and the absence of lamination. Field experiments were carried

In earlier papers the authors discussed several micromorphological and textural characteristics of loamy afterflow deposits derived from loess material and formed during overland flow without splash. This discussion is completed by considering the cr

This paper describes the methods used and some preliminary results of simulated erosion studies on soils with cryptogamic crusts from a semiarid rangeland environment. Two 0·3 m2 shallow monoliths were collected from the upper 20 cm of a Typic Hapla

The effect of repeated freezing and thawing cycles on an experimentally-produced laminated silt loam was studied with the purpose of obtaining more insight into the genesis of macro- and microstructures observed in the loessic formations of Northwest

In this second of five papers on conditions and processes associated with loess accumulation in the southern Netherlands, micromorphology has been used first to characterize deposits ascribed to eolian, fluvial, overland flow, and masswasting process

In the Laboratory of Experimental Geomorphology experiments were carried out on loess from the Pleniglacial A of the Weichselian. Most of the experiments had as their objective determination of the effect of slope angle, rainfall intensity, raindrop
