A method for measurement of global loads on a vessel, using strain measurements from a network of strain sensors and extensive Žnite-element analyses (FEA) with idealistic load cases, is presented. The sensors are attached at carefully selected loca

We discuss the need for ship hull monitoring and the roles such a system may fill during the different stages of a ship's lifetime. We have found that fibre optic sensors are well suited for this application and present the fibre Bragg grating techno

Drop test experiments have been performed with a FRP sandwich panel instrumented with a network of 16 fibre optic (FO) Bragg strain sensors, together with conventional electrical strain gauges for control and verification. The drop tests simulate sla

We have designed, fabricated, and operated an undersea array of eight fiber-optic vector magnetometers. Each magnetometer consists of three magnetostrictive transducers aligned on orthogonal axes and incorporated in a single Michelson interferometer.

It is shown that the frequency components of a non-sinusoidal periodic vibration can be detected using time average TV-holography and phase modulation. The theory for such detection is discussed. Experimental results demonstrating the validity of the

A grating may be employed to fold a laser resonator, thereby enabling the simultaneous extraction of several frequencies from the laser. This limits the range of useful grating constants as compared to the Littrow case. The astigmatism introduced by

We describe an undersea array of eight fiber-optic, three-axis magnetic sensors. The interferometric sensors employ magnetostrictive metallic glass strips as the transducer elements. We discuss the operating principles and the performance of the syst

We have carried out a long-term test of the tension in bolted glass fibre reinforced composite plates that shows that significant tension is left in such joints after one year, and that re-tightening is an option. The tests have provided valuable inf

A 32-element fiber optic hydrophone system has been developed, constructed and tested in the EUCLID project 'All fiber optic hydrophone line array'. Measurements during the final sea trials showed that performance meets or exceeds the specifications.
