Interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) activity is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, and factors that influence thermogenesis appear to act centrally to modify the sympathetic outflow to IBAT. Cold exposure produces a rise in IBAT temp

To investigate the possible differences in autonomic regulation of circulation between endurance trained older subjects and older subjects who practiced moderate exercise, 10 elderly male endurance athletes, aged 65 ± 2.6 (group A), were compared wi

Many experiments show that serotonin (5-HT) controls thyroidal function at hypothalamic level, inhibiting the TRH secretion. The majority of experiments are done in an acute way, consisting of a single serotonin dose injected intraperitoneally (i.p.)

1. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the resting metabolic rate (RMR) and thermogenic effect of a meal (TEM) in older athletes. 2. Eighteen older male volunteers were divided into three groups according to their aerobic power related to fa

Serotonin (5-HT) and thyroid hormones are part of a complex system modulating eating behaviour and energy expenditure. 5'-Deiodinase (5'-D) converts the relatively inactive thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3), and its activity is an indirect meas

SYNOPSIS The serotonin content of Tetrahymena was measured under several growth conditions and after exposure to drugs. Serotonin was maximal during stationary phase, then declined to a level typical of logarithmically growing cells. Addition of 5-hy
