We describe two novel parametric systems for wavelength-tunable ultrashort pulse generation in the spectral range around 1.5 µm. We demonstrate the first single-pass optical parametric generator (OPG) that is directly pumped by a mode-locked laser a

We report on the fabrication of what we believe is the first example of a two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear photonic crystal [Berger, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 4136 (1998)], where the refractive index is constant but where the 2nd order nonlinear susceptibil

We report what are to our knowledge the first observation and characterization of quadratic spatial solitons in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). Using an Nd:YAG (1064 nm) source, we observed self-trapped solitary-wave propagation over more

We report a room temperature technique for periodically inverting the domain structure in a lithium tantalate crystal, via the simultaneous application of optical and electric fields. Ultraviolet light from an Ar ion laser was incident on a 200-μm-t

Single crystal samples of lithium niobate have been spatially patterned with photoresist, and subsequently domain inverted using electric field poling, to produce a range of two dimensional spatial domain structures. Differential etching has subseque

Using periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN), synchronously pumped by a Nd:YLF laser at 1047 nm, optical parametric oscillation is achieved with a mean threshold power as low as 7.5 mW, nearly an order of magnitude lower than previously reported.

A varying refractive index across a wavefront leads to a change in the direction of propagation of the wave. This provides the basis for phase-contrast imaging of transparent or weakly absorbing materials with highly coherent X-ray beams. Lattice dis

We investigated the intensity-dependent absorption coefficient of photorefractive Rh:BaTiO3 from the maximum (633 nm) to the near infra-red end (1.06 µm) of this crystal's sensitivity. A numerical photorefractive model, incorporating dual-wavelength

We report on photoinduced, intensity dependent absorption in "blue" rhodium doped BaTiO3. The change in absorption, observed under illumination by visible or infrared radiation, has successfully been modelled. Agreement obtained between theory and ex

3.6 mW blue (490 nm) light has been generated from a frequency-doubled, gain-switched InGaAs/GaAs diode laser using an aperiodically poled lithium niobate crystal. The matching of the crystal acceptance bandwidth to the laser spectral profile resulte
