Free-space communication in the mid-IR domain has many potential applications, but security is still challenging. Here, the authors use chaos synchronization in a QCL-based free-space link as a way to increase privacy of such transmissions.

We experimentally demonstrate a Long-Wave IR FSO link with a 9.15-µm directly modulated quantum cascade laser at room temperature. Up to 8.1 Gb/s PAM8 transmission over 1.4 meter is achieved with a wideband MCT detector.

We demonstrate a mid-infrared spectrometer based on a quantum cascade laser operated in the intrapulse mode coupled with a custom dense pattern multipass cell. Detection in the range of hundreds of ppm to a few percent has been achieved due to a spec
