In this work, interaction with light was demonstrated for the first time for the valve of a small pennate diatom through numerical calculations. The results show that light is effectively modulated by the valve's microstructure.

Diatoms from historic samples of eight lakes from the Yunnan Plateau, China comprised 296 taxa belonging to 56 genera. The widely distributed species were Achnanthes cf minutissima, Cocconeis placentula, Cymbella leptoceros, Cymbella neocistula, Diad
