Purpose: During needle interventions, successful automated detection of the needle immediately after insertion is necessary to allow the physician identify and correct any misalignment of the needle and the target at early stages, which reduces needl

Guidance of needles for interventions that involve percutaneous advancing of a needle to a target inside the patient's body is one of the key uses of ultrasound, such as for biopsies, ablations, and nerve blocks. During these procedures, image-based

This paper presents a new approach to detect a standard handheld needle in ultrasound-guided interventions. Our proposal is to use natural hand tremor, which causes minute displacement of the needle, to detect the needle in ultrasound B-mode images.

Ultrasound-guided medical interventions are broadly applied in diagnostics and therapy, e.g., regional anesthesia or ablation. A guided intervention using 2-D ultrasound is challenging due to the poor instrument visibility, limited field of view, and

During ultrasound-guided needle interventions, low signal-to-noise ratio and poor needle visibility limit the performance of automated detection systems. This becomes even more challenging when the needle is inserted at higher angles with respect to

This paper presents an automatic localization method for a standard hand-held needle in ultrasound based on temporal motion analysis of spatially decomposed data. Subtle displacement arising from tremor motion has a periodic pattern which is usually

Ultrasound imaging is employed for needle guidance in various minimally invasive procedures such as biopsy guidance, regional anesthesia and brachytherapy. Unfortunately, a needle guidance using 2D ultrasound is very challenging, due to a poor needle
