We report on the first experimental demonstration of a new type of electron-beamdriven radiation source, a 'light-well', which can be used as a tunable nanoscale emitter of optical radiation and surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs).

We report on a tuneable light source, a nanoscale analogue of the free-electron laser. A free electron beam passing through a nano-hole in a periodically layered metal/dielectric structure creates an optical photon source - a 'light-well'.

We have observed that in complex nanostructures, such as pairs of nanorods, hotspots of optical emission induced by electron-beam excitation exist at their point of closest proximity, where strong local field enhancements are expected.

We provide the first experimental evidence of focusing light into subwavelength spots by a 2-dimensional planar photonic structure. When a quasi-periodic array of nanoholes was illuminated with coherent light sources, it created very rich diffraction

We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the Talbot effect on arrays of nano-holes may be used to achieve subwavelength localizations of optical and plasmonic fields.

We report on the first realization of hyperspectral imaging for visualization and excitation of plasmon modes in dimers of 100 nm gold decahedra by a scanning electron beam.

We provide the first evidence of free-space subwavelength focusing without evanescent fields using a photonic nano-structure. Hot-spots smaller than half of the wavelength were observed at distances of tens of wavelengths from the structure.
