The path domain independent integral, S, characterizes fracture within a thermoinelastic material response region. A limited experimental program and associated computational investigation verify that S characterizes fracture for uncoupled thermoplas

The problem of two symmetrically placed interface cracks at rigid curvilinear inclusions under longitudinal shear deformation is considered. A solution valid for arbitrary inclusion shapes is found. It depends on a parameter β describing the cracks.

A general representation of the solution of the elastic curvilinear inclusion problem is given. It is shown that an ellipse and its geometric limits is the only inclusion shape for which a uniform stress applied at infinity induces a constant state o

An exact analytical solution is given for a case of longitudinal shear loading of an unidirectional fiber reinforced composite. The analysis takes into account random spacing between fibers, random variation of fiber radii, and the variation in shear

An exact analytical expression is given for the stress distribution in the matrix for a case of longitudinal shear deformation of an uni directional fiber reinforced composite. The expression takes into account non-uniform spacing between fibers, whi

A critique on the theories predicting the thermoelastic properties of unidirectional fibrous composites is presented. The method of approach in these theories varies from netting analysis to complex statistical methods. This critique provides a conci

The self-consistent model is used to derive an expression for the effective longitudinal shear modulus of a unidirectional filamentary composite reinforced with curvilinear fibers. It is found that shaped fibers result in a higher effective shear mod

A fully nonlinear progressive-ply-failure finite element program for modeling the initiation and propagation of damage in composite structures containing stress concentrators is described. The application of the program is illustrated by analyzing do
