The corporate optical backbone network (COBNET) joint research project is aiming at the next generation of high-performance corporate networks based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) add/drop rings. Scalability considerations are of primary i

Compact Blue-Green Lasers.
There is currently considerable research on compact blue light sources that use periodically-poled waveguides for quasi-phasematched frequency doubling of GaAlAs laser diodes.1,2 For such devices to become practical, they must be configured in such a

Spin polarized photoemission by optical spin orientation is a simple and elegant means to increase the resolution of photoelectron spectroscopy. This is demonstrated by the experimental observation of the presence of the spin-orbit splitting of the t

Spin polarized photoemission experiments are reported on NiMnSb which has been predicted to be a halfmetallic ferromagnet. The 100% polarization near photothreshold has not been observed. If an energy gap in the minority electron density-of-states sh

In a spin-polarized photoemission experiment the escaping polarized electrons interact with a paramagnetic surface layer of variable thickness. From the depolarization of the photoelectrons the exchange constant acting between the photoelectrons and

Spin polarized electrons produced by polarized light in a Ge single crystal are depolarized by thin layers of Ni and Ce deposited on the surface of the sample. The mean free path for spin-exchange scattering is found to be (12.5 ± 1.5) A in Ni and (

A new concept for birefringence compensation in planar optical waveguides applying a double-core structure is introduced. It is demonstrated on waveguides fabricated in silicon oxynitride technology for applications in optical telecommunication.
