Two tigogenin glycosides and two diosgenin glycosides have been isolated from a methanolic extract of the roots of bush red pepper. An attempt to isolate the individual spirostanol glycosides directly was unsuccessful. These compounds have very simil

Three new steroid glycosides of the spirostan series — capsicosides A1, B1, and C1 — have been isolated from a methanolic extract of the roots of red pepper. In an investigation of the products of complete acid hydrolysis of these glycosides, a s

6-Bromobrevicolline, 6,8-dibromobrevicolline, 6,8-dibromobrevicarine, and tribromo-brevicarine were obtained by direct bromination of brevicolline and brevicarine. 6-Bromo-brevicolline was isolated from the mixture obtained by bromination of brevicar

The results of a study of the oxidation of brevicolline has shown that the structural formula of the alkaloid is 1-methyl-4-(N-methyl-2′-pyrrolidyl)-β-carboline. The formula has been confirmed by mass spectroscopy and NMR.

The direct nitration of brevicolline, brevicarine, and methyl-, acetyl-, and hydroxybrevicarine with concentrated nitric acid gave 6- and 8-nitrobrevicolline and 6,8-dinitro derivatives of the enumerated compounds. 6-Nitroharman was obtained by oxida

1. When DL-[2−14C] tryptophan, sodium [2−14C] pyrotartrate, sodium [14/C]-formate, and universally labeled L-[14C] glutamic acid were introduced through the root system intoCarex brevicollis DC, active brevicolline was obtained.
