Elimination of undesirable co-metabolites from industrial fermentations is often required due to the toxicities associated with the contaminants and/or due to difficulties in removing the contaminants during downstream processing. Sulochrin is a co-m

Conidia of Penicillium urticae were immobilized in Kappa-Carrageenan beads (2–3 mm) by a previously described procedure to yield an in situ grown immobilized cell population which could be induced to produce the antibiotic and mycotoxin, patulin. W

The physicochemical properties of the extracellular protease of the fungus Malbranchea pulchella, for which we have adopted the name thermomycolase, were investigated. The molecular weight of diisopropylphosphorylthermomycolase was found to be 32 000

Attention is drawn to the fact that, in comparison to those values derived from sedimentation equilibrium experiments, gel chromatographic methods give anomalously low molecular weights for a variety of proteases. This appears to be particularly true

A brief introduction to the mycotoxin, patulin is followed by a summary of the early contributions which demonstrated that patulin and its precursor, 6-methylsalicylic acid were derived from acetyl-CoA and hence are polyketides. The polyketide lacton

The continuous and semi-batch production of the antibiotic patulin by immobilized Penicillium urticae cells in a three phase fluidized bed reactor was investigated. A key factor for the success of the process was the limitation of the nitrogen source

Immobilized cell technology provides a simple and promising alternative to submerged free cell fermentations for the production of antibiotics like penicillin-G. Recently, our biotechnology group has successfully developed a three phase fluidized bed

Although manganese had been shown to be an essential requirement for patulin biosynthesis, its site of action was unknown. Four possibilities were considered. A manganese requirement for the second pathway enzyme, a decarboxylase, was discounted sinc

The inactivation of the proteolytic enzyme papain by hydrogen peroxide produces a sulfenic acid by oxidation of the essential SH of cysteine 25 at the enzyme active site:[Formula: see text]The kinetics of repair of this entity by cysteine were consis
