We have employed a purely optical method to measure spin-lattice relaxation in the lower excited (4)S(3/2) state of Er(3+) in LaF(3) at helium temperatures. Above 3 K the relaxation is dominated by an Orbach process through the upper (4)S(3/2) state.

The total decay rate of the 6I7/2 term level of Gd3+ in YOCl and LiYF4 is studied as a function of temperature. This rate is described as a termal average of the difference contributions of the crystal field components. The difference between the rat

We discuss the spectroscopic studies of ions in solids which throw light on the properties of excited states which are reached by optical absorption from the ground state. The difference in the ion—lattice coupling between ground and excited states

Optimal transitions between the 5D4 excited state of the Tb3+ (4f)8 configuration and the crystal field splitted components of the (4f)85d configuration have been observed using high-resolution laser excitation of Tb-doped powder samples. The Excited

We examine the predictions of models employed to describe nonradiative multiphonon decay processes between electronic states of optically-active centres in inorganic insulating solids. We initially consider the single configurational coordinate model

We examine the nonradiative multiphonon relaxation mechanism between electronic levels of optically-active ions in glasses, and we compare the values of the relaxation rate with that found in crystals.

Optical transitions on dopant ions in glass exhibit a large inhomogeneous broadening due to the random nature of the sites occupied by the dopant ions. The technique of fluorescence line narrowing (FLN) can overcome this inhomogeneous broadening and

The luminescence of Gd3+ in YOCl is reported. From temperature dependent emission spectra and decay measurements, the Judd–Ofelt parameters Ω2 and Ω6 of Gd3+ in YOCl are obtained: Ω2=2.97×10−23 m2 and Ω6=8.65×10−24 m2. The relative consis
