Coaxial fiber lasers are studied via numerical simulations as an alternative to conventional cladding-pumped fiber lasers. The coaxial fiber consists of a Ho-doped core surrounded by a Tm-doped ring. When pumped at 805 nm, this fiber type resulted in

Simulations of a novel coaxial fiber having a Ho-doped core surrounded by a Tm-doped ring resulted in 52% laser efficiency. The conventional method, a Tm:fiber laser pumping a Ho:fiber laser, yielded a maximum 43% efficiency.

Spectroscopic and laser properties of Yb 3+ in ceramic Y 2 O 3 have been studied at room and cryogenic temperatures. Laser performance is very substantially improved by cooling to liquid nitrogen temperature, primarily due to the great reduction in g
