In the interfaces of non-magnetic complex oxides, it is unclear which defects are responsible for the magnetic interfaces. Here, the authors find the B-site cation stoichiometry is crucial for the creation and control of magnetism at the interface be

A hot-stage unit, operating over the temperature range from ambient to 1000°C has been used to study the combustion of black powder. Direct observation of heating of mixtures was supplemented by 35-mm photomicrography. Results are presented for blac

The thermoanalytical techniques e.g. DSC, TG/DTG and Hot Stage Microscopy have been used to examine the system of NaClO4, S and charcoal mixtures. The results show that there is no reaction between NaClO4 and S alone, but the presence of charcoal act

The effect of substitution of KNO3 by NaNO3 in black powder has been studied by DSC, TG/DTG and FTIR emission spectroscopy. Unlike KNO3, there is no visible exothermic reaction between S and NaNO3, immediately after the melting of NaNO3. Instead a mi

We show that a two-dimensional spin system can occur for ``heavy,'' ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{J}}$=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3/2 holes resulting from a reduction to tetragonal symmetry produced by biaxial strain or confinement in a quantum well. Evide

An experimental programme is described, in which a number of thermo-analytical techniques, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG and DTG) are applied to investigate the combustion of black powder. The primary aim has been to i

We report measurements of the dispersion relation for holes in the M j = 3 2 strain split valence band in Ga − xInxSb/GaSb quantum wells. The strain decoupling of the M j = 3 2 and M j = 1 2 levels gives the M j = 3 2 ∼ 0.07 m0) for in-plane moti

We argue that a piece of paper, of thickness T and width W, can be folded a maximum number N = 0.962 ln(f W/T) times, where f is a factor of order unity, determined by mechanical constraints. N typically takes a value of around six.

We describe studies of magnetotransport in antidot arrays formed by focused ion-beam implantation. This shows the dominant role played by interconnects between dotlike reservoirs. Two separate Shubnikov--de Haas periodicities are observed at high and
