A direct synthetic method producing mainly CH3PCl2 from red P and CH3Cl has been modified to produce mainly (CH3)2PCl. The reaction was carried out in the presence of copper and active carbon in a pyrex tube (70 cm. × 2.5 cm. I. D.) at 340–360°C.
