Biogenesis of the secondary cell wall in trees involves the massive biosynthesis of the phenylalanine-derived polymer lignin. Arogenate dehydratase (ADT) catalyzes the last, and rate-limiting, step of the main pathway for phenylalanine biosynthesis.
