Abstract Single crystal paleointensity (SCP) reveals that the Moon lacked a long-lived core dynamo, though mysteries remain. An episodic dynamo, seemingly recorded by some Apollo basalts, is temporally and energetically problematic. We evaluate this

Abstract Earth’s magnetic field was in a highly unusual state when macroscopic animals of the Ediacara Fauna diversified and thrived. Any connection between these events is tantalizing but unclear. Here, we present single crystal paleointensity dat

Abstract It has been suggested that the ice shell of Jupiter's moon Europa may drift non‐synchronously due to tidal torques. Here we argue that torques applied by the underlying ocean are also important and can result in non‐synchronous rotation.

New single crystal paleointensity data show that the geomagnetic field was renewed in the early Cambrian after near collapse in the Ediacaran Period. This implies that the innermost/outermost structure of the inner core formed 450 million yrs. ago.

The bulk of Uranus consists of a rock–ice core, but the relative proportions of rock and ice are unknown. Radioactive decay of potassium in the silicates produces ^40 Ar. If transport of argon from the core to the gaseous envelope is efficient, a m

Titan’s ice shell floats on top of a global ocean, as revealed by the large tidal Love number k _2 = 0.616 ± 0.067 registered by Cassini. The Cassini observation exceeds the predicted k _2 by one order of magnitude in the absence of an ocean, and

As one of the most detectable types of terrestrial planets, lava worlds are highly prioritized targets for exoplanet atmosphere characterization since their atmospheres may reveal what they are made of and how. Our work examines the possibility of tr
