The demonstration by Ivan Barnes et al. that the serpentinization of fresh Alpine-type ultramafic rocks results in the exhalation of hot alkaline fluids is foundational to the submarine alkaline vent theory (AVT) for life’s emergence to its ‘impr

The assumption that there was a “water problem” at the emergence of life—that the Hadean Ocean was simply too wet and salty for life to have emerged in it—is here subjected to geological and experimental reality checks. The “warm little pon

Green rust is a Fe(II)/Fe(III) layered double hydroxide. Its layers are positively charged because of the occurrence of mixed Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ valence states. The charge is compensated by exchangeable anions located in the interlayer space. Green rust

International audience; A possibly prominent role for Green Rust minerals in life's emergence is inferred from a comparison of their structural, mechano-dynamic and electrochemical properties and of the layout of bioenergetic, i.e. free energy conver

Iron and manganese are ubiquitous in the natural environment. FeII-FeIII layered double hydroxide, commonly called green rust (GR), and MnIII-MnIV birnessite (Bir) are also well known to be reactive solid compounds. Therefore, studying the chemical i

International audience; Fougerite is a naturally occurring green rust, that is, a layered double hydroxide (LDH) containing iron (Fe). Fougerite was identified in natural settings such as hydromorphic soils. It is one of the few inorganic materials w
