An optical reference unit at 1547.825 nm was built in a rack-mounted engineered design. A frequency stability of better than 10-9 (100 kHz) was reached.

Three different types of tunable laser diodes for use in a scanning heterodyne spectrometer at 1.55 mu m were examined. Typical criteria like linewidth, tuning range, driving conditions and output power were measured and compared.

An automatic head-end control unit for a ten channel CMC system was built, tested and shipped to GEC-Marconi, Caswell where it was installed. Absolute frequency stabilization experiments are reported with offset locking of up to 95 GHz.
