Photonic and Phononic Properties of Engineered Nanostructures X.
Nano-architected materials have the potential to be adopted in several areas including photonic devices and structural materials. We present a 3D interference lithography technique with dielectric metasurfaces at visible wavelengths that allows patte

A novel microfluidic calorimeter that measures the enthalpy change of reactions occurring in 100 µm diameter aqueous droplets in fluoropolymer oil has been developed. The aqueous reactants flow into a microfluidic droplet generation chip in separate

A technique to locally grow germanium-on-insulator (GOI) structure on silicon (Si) platform is studied. On (001) Si wafer, silicon dioxide (SiO2) is thermally grown and patterned to define growth window for germanium (Ge). Crystalline Ge is grown via

Nanostructured metallic films have the potential to replace metal oxide films as transparent electrodes in optoelectronic devices. An ideal transparent electrode should possess a high, broadband, and polarization-independent transmittance. Convention

Plasmonics has started to facilitate the replacement of bulky optical components in optical systems by compact nanometallic elements that perform the same function. This allows for a natural and very dense integration with electronic devices. In this

Researchers demonstrate a silicon nanowire photodetector whose gold electrical contacts render the device ‘invisible’. The wire and gold coating have opposing dipole moments that almost cancel each other out in the far-field. Although the net dip

The ability to detect light over a broad spectral range is central to practical optoelectronic applications and has been successfully demonstrated with photodetectors of two-dimensional layered crystals such as graphene and MoS2. However, polarizatio

Compact optical filters are proposed using an aperiodic grating of fixed element size [i.e., a binary supergrating (BSG)] with a large refractive index step. These filters allow for almost arbitrary wavelength filtering, yet they are more compact tha

Spectral imaging and sensing techniques, new solar cell designs and wavelength-division multiplexing in optical communication rely on structures that collect and sort photons by wavelength. The strong push for chip-scale integration of such optical c

CLEO:2011 - Laser Applications to Photonic Applications.
We present a plasmonic device that can determine the state of polarization of an incident light beam over a narrow wavelength band. The measurement results show 25 and 1.13 contrast ratio for linear and circular polarizations at 830nm.
