We present a new formalism for the analysis of passively Q-switched laser systems that facilitates the performance of sensitivity studies and system optimizations. The developed formalism is general enough to include the impact of an ESA process in t

We have demonstrated the first stoichiometric Yb/sup 3+/ laser based on Yb/sub 3/A/sub 5/O/sub 12/ (YbAG). The laser operated in pulsed mode with a highest possible duty cycle of 85%. A slope efficiency of 27%, with respect to absorbed energy, was me

Transition-metal-doped zinc chalcogenide crystals have recently been investigated as potential mid-infrared lasers. Tetrahedrally coordinated Cr/sup 2+/ ions are especially attractive as lasants on account of high luminescence quantum yields for emis

A glass waveguide amplifier was constructed in an Er/sup 3+/- and Yb/sup 3+/-doped phosphate glass. The waveguide channels were defined via a field-assisted Ag/sup +/ diffusion process. A net gain of 4.1 dB was measured at 1534 nm in a 3-mm length wa

We report on material properties of Yb/sub 3/Al/sub 5/O/sub 12/ and highly doped Yb:YAG. Fluorescence lifetimes, calorimetry measurements and thermal properties have been obtained for Yb atomic concentrations up to 100%.

We report on the laser performance of a Nd:phosphate glass (Nd:IOG-1) channel waveguide laser fabricated by electric field assisted Ag{sup +} diffusion. Lasing was achieved in two different size channels, 29 x 9 {micro}m{sup 2} and 50 x 9 {micro}m{su

Summary form only given. Combined with appropriate laser designs such as the thin disk and waveguide architectures, highly-doped solid-state laser materials offer the potential for higher average power scaling and improved thermal management. Because
