The structure and properties of Sn-Ag3Sn directionally-frozen eutectic alloys have been examined over the growth range 2×10−4 to 2×10−1 mm sec−1. The structure is predominantly broken lamellar to 1.3×10−2 mm sec−1, but with relatively po

In other studies [1], it has been found that dilute tin alloys containing one of the fast-diffusing solutes Ag, Au and Zn display marked but transitory increases in hardness when quenched from near eutectic temperatures. In this paper, it is shown th

The Vickers hardness values of Al-Si eutectic alloys, solidified unidirectionally at rates ranging from 2.8×10−5 to 1 cm sec−1, have been determined. These are compared with associated tensile and compressive properties. It is shown that there i

The structure and mechanical properties of Sn-Zn unidirectionally frozen eutectic alloys have been examined over the growth range 5 to 4000mm h−1. The structure is predominantly broken-lamellar below 750mm h−1 but becomes increasingly fibrous at

The pressure/temperature characteristics of the grey (semiconductor) tin→white (metal) tin transition in pure tin and dilute Sn–Ge alloys has been examined by following electrical resistance changes in strip specimens. It is shown that grey tin

It is shown that the temperature, Tc, at which the grey modification will convert to the white phase in dilute SnGe alloys increases with the amount of germanium, according as Tc = 32.0 + 51.8C0.33. It is concluded that this increase in transition

It is well known that silicon, germanium and other diamond-cubic semi-conductors may transform to a metal when a pressure of the order of 100 kilobars is applied. This renders the detailed study of the transformation experimentally difficult. Grey ti

Melt‐spun Sn–Si alloy tapes were transformed to the grey modification at −30 °C to give compact specimens. On subsequent heating, the grey tin phase was seen to be stable to elevated temperatures, e.g., 90 °C for the Sn–0.6 wt % S alloy.
