We introduce the concept of displacement phase – a phase shift resulting from horizontal movements of a grating. We utilize this phenomenon to design a tunable achromatic circular waveplate from two topology-optimized geometric phase metagratings.

We present aluminum-based circular polarizers for visible light. Three separate designs of a single film thickness can cover the spectrum from 400 – 700 nm. Theoretical efficiencies are above 80% and extinction ratios are above 100.
