Abstract Total internal reflection (TIR) governs the guiding mechanisms of almost all dielectric waveguides and therefore constrains most of the light in the material with the highest refractive index. The few options available to access the properti

The availability of integrated mid-infrared light sources is restricted by a lack of suitable materials and increasingly complicated fabrication requirements. Here, a single-mode silicon microresonator laser is demonstrated, who’s emission in the m

The use of nanophotonics to rapidly and precisely reconfigure light beams for the optical stimulation of neurons in vivo has remained elusive. Here we report the design and fabrication of an implantable silicon-based probe that can switch and route m

We demonstrate SiN-based passive waveguides with ultra-low thermo-optic effect, based on a novel waveguiding mechanism that confines light in the lower index of refraction. We demonstrate broadband operation over at least 200nm, with less than 0.01%

We demonstrate a platform of metasurface on silicon photonics to exploit both the guided and radiative modes. We report examples including waveguide-fed metalenses, mode size converters for millimeter-size emission, and compact 2D beam steerers.

We demonstrate a single longitudinal mode, tunable mid-IR laser by self-injection locking a multiple longitudinal mode Interband Cascade Laser (ICL) to a high-Q Si microresonator at 3.4 p,m.

Thanks to its high Kerr non-linearity and its low linear absorption, silicon is a material of choice for optical devices in the mid-infrared (from 3 to 5 microns) such as microresonators. In this wavelength range, the available optical sources such a

We use light from a visible laser diode to directly tune silicon-on-chip microresonators by thermo-optical effect. We show that this direct tuning is local, non invasive and has a much smaller time constant than global temperature tuning methods. Suc
