The use of small apertures or sharpened tips as sensing elements in scanned‐probe optical sensing devices has led to the development of a number of instruments that provide lateral spatial resolution much finer than that available in conventional o

Electrostriction is identified as one of the main sources of crosstalk in CATV networks using WDM and sub-carrier multiplexing. The contribution of electrostriction to crosstalk is experimentally investigated for up to 8 WDM channels and enhancements

Coherent soliton packets generated in a passively mode-locked fiber laser are transmitted through 23 km of dispersion-decreasing fiber. We observe a shift of the phase difference between solitons that is due to intrapulse Raman scattering. We attribu

Generally, it has been assumed that the non-resonant electronic response is the origin of the intensity-dependent refractive index in silica fibers. However, electrostriction has recently been shown to be the source of long range soliton interactions

The lateral spatial resolution of a collection-mode scanning optical microscope is discussed in terms of the electromagnetic mode solutions of the probe tip. Analysis of glass rheology during tip fabrication suggests a region in experimental paramete

Several issues concerning lateral spatial resolution in scanning optical microscopes, SOM's, are addressed. After identifying what is meant by resolution in an SOM, the role of probe tip morphology is discussed. Consideration of the physical mechanis

The transverse optical intensity profile in fibers affects the efficiency of acoustic mode excitation by the optical field and the subsequent response of the field to the excited acoustic modes. The magnitude of the electrostrictive nonlinear coeffic
