We report ~140 W of power from the laser based on Er-nanoparticle-doped fiber with direct diode pumping at 1528 nm. This is believed to be the highest power ever reported from resonantly diode-pumped Er-fiber laser.

Reflection spectra and index structures created by the growth of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are modeled using a modified piecewise-uniform approach that can accommodate realistic index growth behavior. Because grating formation generally involves no

In this paper we present our recent research results in synthesizing various metal oxide nanoparticles for use as laser gain media (solid state as well as fiber lasers) and transparent ceramic windows via two separate techniques, co-precipitation and

In this presentation we will describe the effect of radiation on a low bend loss, polarization maintaining (PM) fiber for an interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG). Our experimental design for exploring radiation effects incorporated unusual st

We have performed experiments to elucidate the mechanism of photosensitivity in rare-earth-doped fluorozirconate (ZBLAN) glasses. Glasses doped with Ce, Tb, Tm, and Pr were studied. Permanent holographic gratings were written in bulk samples using 24

The overall deterioration of the national civil infrastructure due to aging and usage beyond the anticipated loads and lifetimes for which it was designed, combined with the increasing cost of maintenance and repair, has resulted in the need for impr

We propose, and verify in the case of a Ge-doped-silica-core optical fiber, a general explanation for the power-law dependencies on dose frequently observed for the concentrations of radiation-induced defect centers in insulating glasses. This insigh

A simple CCD-camera spectrometer was deployed at the Los Alamos Spallation Radiation Effects Facility to characterize fast-neutron irradiation effects in several silica-based optical fibers over the wavelength range ~ 450-1100 nm. The experimental ar

The loss induced in polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers by low dose rate [0.01 Gy/h, where 1 Gy = 100 rads(Si)] radiation exposure has been found to vary from0.4 to approximately 6 dB/km-10 Gy, depending on the wavelength of measurement and the fibe
