Homogenates of Physarum polycephalum incorporate [3H]dATP into nuclear DNA at an initial rate of approximately 15% of the in vivo rate. To attain this level of synthesis, cultures, are homogenized in a medium containing Mg++, EGTA, glucose and spermi

Postmitochondrial supernatant fractions derived from livers of hypophysectomized rats were found to contain twice the level of total ("active" + "latent") alkaline RNase found in similar preparations from normal animals. Polysomes isolated from both

The slime mold, Physarum polycephalum , was cultivated in a soluble natural medium in shake flasks and in 30-liter and 50-gal conventional baffled fermentors. Yields of 6 to 10 g (dry weight) per liter were obtained in the large-scale fermentations.

Actidione, reportedly a specific inhibitor of protein synthesis, was found to reduce the incorporation of labeled amino acids into proteins of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum without drastically inhibiting the incorporation of nucleic acid precu

THE DNA of cells exposed to ionizing radiation incurs strand breaks and certain other types of damage (for review see ref. 1). Single-strand breaks are repaired both in prokaryotes2,3 and in eukaryotes4–6. But although double-strand break repair ha

Radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks are rejoined in homogenates and isolated nuclei of Physarum polycephalum. In agreement with results obtained previously for intact plasmodia, double-strand breaks are less extensively repaired in nuclei isol
