Making use of a recently developed intramolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation process as the key operation, the first total synthesis, in racemic form, of pygmaeocin C has been achieved.

Starting from 3-ethoxy-2-cyclohexenone, 4-(p-methoxyphenylethyl)-2-cyclohexenone (1), a natural ketone isolated from the gametophytic tissues of the liverwort Plagiochila longispina, was prepared via a simple two-step approach in 63% overall yield.
