We investigate entanglement source synchronization using a forwarded-pump signal sent over a 3.2-km free-space retro-reflected link. Results show sub-picosecond alignment between the sources. The paper considers several fundamental and practical aspe

We propose a means for synchronizing picosecond-class photon generation at a Bell State Measurement device attempting to perform entanglement swapping with received photons that have been transmitted through the atmosphere from a moving platform.

Optical communications systems using pulsed optical modulations and photon-counting receivers have been demonstrated to be capable of very high photon efficiencies. The basic trade is to achieve high photon efficiency by using more bandwidth along wi

Missions will continue to need very capable communications systems to transfer data to and from Deep Space, both for science and human exploration. Despite the amazing accomplishments of NASA’s Deep Space Network to date, even higher data rates wil

Pulsed optical modulations with photon-counting receivers have been shown to be capable of very high photon efficiencies. With channel capacity as the relevant metric, we review the mathematical models of free-space receivers with photon-counting det
