Piñon-juniper (PJ) woodlands are an expansive and dynamic dryland ecosystem in the US that encompass a wide range of spatial, temporal, and ecological diversity. The dynamism of PJ woodland extent and abundance over space and time is attributable to

Abstract Fire regimes in North American forests are diverse and modern fire records are often too short to capture important patterns, trends, feedbacks, and drivers of variability. Tree‐ring fire scars provide valuable perspectives on fire regimes

Pinyon-juniper ecosystems occur extensively across western North America, and at the landscape scale, variation in structure and composition is influenced by topographic position, soils, disturbance history, and local climate. The persistent pinyon-j

The greater than 200,000 ha Wallow Fire of May-July 2011 burned through mixed-conifer and ponderosa pine forests in Arizona and New Mexico in the southwestern U.S. This “mega-fire” set the stage for an opportunistic study to examine understory pl

We review science-based adaptation strategies for western North American (wNA) forests that include restoring active fire regimes and fostering resilient structure and composition of forested landscapes. As part of the review, we address common quest
