The reaction of diiodobenzene and sulfur in air at elevated temperatures (230-300°C), has been investigated by high-temperature EPR spectroscopy. The first direct observation of radicals under conditions of poly(p-phenylene sulfide/disulfide) synthe

Poly(phenylene sulfide), made via the melt polymerization of p-diiodobenzene and sulfur, has been prepared with added branching species at levels up to 1.0 mol%. Effects of increasing branching on the thermal characteristics were seen to be quite lar

Deuterium NMR spectroscopy shows that the aromatic rings in deuterated amorphous poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) undergo rapid 180 o flips at room temperature. Detailed analysis shows that any subsidiary motion that accompanies ring flipping involves r

This work reports attempts to extend to unsaturated anhydrides the rapid reaction of dicarboxylic acid anhydrides with ethylene carbonate to form polymer directly. The reaction of unsaturated diacid anhydrides with two cyclic carbonates, ethylene and

Polyterephthalates made from terephthalic acid and a series of cyclic alkylene carbonates to give short side-chain branching were amorphous. The Tg increased from poly(ethylene terephthalate) to poly(1,2-propylene terephthalate), and then an expected

The kinetics of the polymerization of phthalic anhydride with ethylene carbonate to give poly(ethylene phthalate) were studied to elucidate the reaction mechanism. Zero-order kinetics were observed to varying degrees of reaction depending upon reacti

The kinetics of the reaction of terephthalic acid with a number of ethylene carbonates in the presence of an amine catalyst were examined. All reactions apparently follow first-order kinetics; therefore, the solution rate of TPA is not rate-limiting.
