There are limited fiber-based single-mode laser sources over the visible and near infrared range. Nonlinear conversion through four-wave mixing in photonic crystal fibers allows for the generation of new wavelengths far from a pump wavelength. Utiliz

We demonstrate efficient pulse-energy extraction from a partly-quenched erbium-doped aluminosilicate fiber amplifier. This has a high erbium-concentration, which allows for short devices with reduced nonlinear distortions, but which also results in p

NRL is developing new glasses that transmit within the visible to LWIR range for use in multispectral imaging. We had previously developed NRL glasses which transmit in 0.9 to > 12 µm in wavelength, with refractive index ranging from 2.38 to 3.17, t

Fiber lasers rely on clad pump architectures where double clad designs are used. Currently, polymers are used successfully as pump claddings on Yb-doped laser fibers. In order to transition to resonantly pumped fiber lasers at eye safer wavelengths,

Fiber design strategies for increased threshold of SBS and TMI are presented. We report a high efficiency erbium nanoparticle doped fiber incorporating acoustic guiding layers with a significantly reduced SBS gain coefficient.

Erbium doped fiber lasers are attractive candidates for high energy lasers (HELs) used in directed energy applications because they operate at wavelengths that are both safer to the eye and in a high atmospheric transmission window. A significant iss

We investigate high-energy pulse amplification in a counter-directionally cladding-pumped partly-quenched heavily erbium-doped fiber. Despite the quenching, we reach a pulse energy of 0.38 mJ, which is several times the saturation energy at the 1563-

An Er-nanoparticle-doped fiber laser cladding-pumped at 975 nm generates 110 W at 1605 nm with 40.6% slope efficiency and M2~7. High Er-concentration (4×1025 ions/m3) and pump brightness allows for adequate pump absorption even without Yb-codoping.

Co-doping of Er with RE ions in silica fibers is used to reduce Er clustering. A single mode core pumped Er-La fiber with an Er ion concentration of 1.37×1025 ions/m3 exhibited a slope efficiency of 76%.

A nanoparticle (NP) doping technique was developed for fabricating erbium (Er)- and holmium (Ho)-doped silica-based optical fibers for high energy lasers. Slope efficiencies in excess of 74% were realized for Er NP doping in a single mode fiber based
