The title compounds have been prepared by a four-step sequence from 3-acetoxy-2,2-dimethyl-1-propanal and a novel non-hazardous and stereospecific route to cis-3-amido-azetidin-2-ones by the use of N-benzyl-N-carbobenzoxyglycine is described.

Treatment of ketone hydrazones, oximes, and semicarbazones with benzeneseleninic anhydride readily affords the parent carbonyl compound in good yields, even in cases resistant to known methodology.

A number of alcohols have been oxidised by benzeneseleninic anhydride to carbonyl derivatives in high yield; in appropriate cases, the corresponding dehydrogenated compounds are obtained by further oxidation.
