High‐voltage, low‐energy, Mather‐geometry plasma focus experiments were performed to study large sheath formation input power, fast rundown, and current optimization and stabilization during collapse and pinch. For the parameters of these exper

Two switches are described with the capability of rapidly interrupting high-power circuits: a vacuum triode with a large-area plasma cathode, and a grid-controlled plasma conduction switch. Theoretical models for the vacuum triode imply that it could

Experiments are described on a plasma cathode with biased grids to prevent entry of ions into the electron extraction gap. The cathode has potential applications to the generation of high‐current pulsed electron beams. Operation at 20 A/cm2 is theo

Two‐dimensional spatially resolved K shell spectra from hot (Te≂40–400 eV), dense (ne≂1019–1021 cm−3) aluminum plasmas have been recorded using a convex curved KAP crystal spectrograph in a dispersion mapping mode with an orthogonal imagi

We report here on the theoretical interpretation of results related to compression experiments performed on the University of Rochester’s four beam laser system. The experimental results show volume reduction on the order of 300 with compressed ele

Arrays of vacuum arcs have been investigated as a high-flux source of metal ions. Twelve adjacent arcs have been ignited by a single trigger input. The ignition method consists of overvolting the interelectrode gap to 50 kV with a low-energy pulser;

The measured temporal evolution of the current distribution in a capacitively‐driven, coaxial plasma gun discharge is presented. The variation of the delay between admitting a gas puff at the breech of the gun and the discharge of the capacitor ban

Experimental results are presented on a method for extracting well‐focused ion beams from plasma sources with time‐varying properties. An electrostatic grid was used to stop the flow of plasma electrons so that only ions entered the extraction ga

We have measured the ion flux for different electrode materials in a vacuum arc. The vacuum arc has a point-plane geometry. The ion species in the generated plasma are identified using a time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer. Ion species that have been g
