Studies using artificial diets were used to show that the insects can compensate to some extent for dietary dilution with cellulose, by ingesting larger volumes. This is discussed in relation to crop emptying. RESUME EFFETS DE LA CELLULOSE DANS LA RA

Removal of the Frontal ganglion in young adult locusts results in growth arrest, disruption of food passage in the gut, reduced faecal out put, and a high mortality. The effects of the operation in young adults differ in degree from those observed in

Artificial diets containing [14C]cellulose and [14C]hemicellulose were prepared and fed to adult females. During the first 300 h after ingestion, 14CO2 was recovered equivalent to about 73% (cellulose) and 48% (hemicellulose) of the label ingested. F

The posterior colon of worker-caste termites accommdates an abundant, heterogeneous population of procaryotic organisms which are retained by attachment to prominent cuticular spines elaborated from the gut wall. The spines extend to nearly one half
