The photo-oxidation of the precursor polymer to Durham polyacetylene has been studied by thermal analysis and ultra-violet, infra-red and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. It is concluded that the process that is involved in the

We report on x-ray scattering experiments of sodium and lithium doped polyacetylene in which the structure parallel to the polymer chains (along the c-axis) is probed using recently developed in-situ electro-chemical techniques. As expected, the c-ax

The Durham route to polyacetylene provides, for the first time, the possibility of controlling the crystalline structure of this fascinating material. This control will enable us to probe the role of the redox doping and relative spatial co-ordinates

The nature of the proposed defect states in conjugated polymers (solitons and polarons in polyacetylene, polarons and bipolarons in other materials) is expected to be strongly dependent on the morphology and chain conjugation length of the polymer. P

A full investigation of the chemical structure and morphology of undoped poly(acetylene) is a necessary prerequisite for complete understanding of its novel electrical properties. Various techniques have been used to characterise poly(acetylene) prod

Carbon fibre surface properties have been studied by measuring the electrochemical behaviour of the hexacyano ferrate (III)/ferrate(II) couple using carbon fibre brush electrodes. Courtaulds Grafil polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based fibres have been studi

Mechanistic aspects of the two step Durham route to polyacetylene are discussed. It is shown that a catalyst based on MoCl5 gives a higher proportion of cis vinylenes in both precursor polymer and nascent polyacetylene than does a WC16 based system.

Polyacetylene prepared by the Shirakawa route is a mat of crystalline fibrills, which are capable of being oxidized or reduced to a highly conducting state. Polyacetylene can also be produced from a soluble precursor polymer by a thermally driven tra

The elimination and transformation reaction of. Durham polyacetylene has been monitored “by resonance Raman spectroscopy. The resonance Raman and photoluminescence spectrum from short cis segments, present in the pre-cursor polymer, has been record
