We report on x-ray and neutron scattering studies that reveal the structure of interfaces of C60 layers with adjacent transition metal layers, in this instance, Cu. Such interfaces produce room-temperature long-range spin order that is not described

The electronic behaviour of complex oxides such as LaNiO3 depends on many intrinsic and extrinsic factors, making it challenging to identify microscopic mechanisms. Here the authors demonstrate the influence of oxygen vacancies on the thickness-depen

We report X-ray resonant magnetic scattering studies of a Permalloy artificial square ice nanomagnet array, focussing on the field-driven evolution of the sum Σ and difference Δ signals of left and right handed circularly polarized synchrotron X-ra

The complex phase diagrams of strongly correlated oxides arise from the coupling between physical and electronic structure. This can lead to a renormalization of the phase boundaries when considering thin films rather than bulk crystals due to reduce

We present all-optical studies of spin dynamics in two classes of ferrimagnets. Both sets of experiments use table-top laser-based pump–probe techniques to examine the ultrafast and longer timescale spin excitations. We use the visible/near infra-r

Strained materials can exhibit drastically modified physical properties in comparison to their fully relaxed analogues. We report on the x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) of a strained NiFe

Using x-ray photoelectron emission microscopy we have observed the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in a (3 at%)Pd-doped FeRh epilayer. By quantitatively analyzing the resultant images we observe that as the epilayer transfor

We have investigated the unoccupied electronic structure of submonolayer amounts of cesium on the Cu(100) and Cu(111) surfaces by inverse photoemission (IPE) and work-function measurements. At very low Cs coverages on both substrates, IPE spectra obt

We present inverse photoemission spectra from the Cs Cu (100) and Cs Cu (111) systems, obtained with a photon-energy dispersive grating spectrograph. On both substrates, the intensity of a Cs-derived unoccupied electronic state increased with increas

The Pd M4VV and M5VV Auger spectra of the 0.1 ML Pd/Ag(100) dilute surface alloy have been measured using Auger-photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy. The M4VV spectrum indicates that Pd 3d(3/2) core holes have a Coster-Kronig decay rate that is app
