Benzophenones are UV-blockers found in most common sunscreens. The ability of Scyphozoan planula larvae of Cassiopea xamachana and C. frondosa to swim and complete metamorphosis in concentrations 0–228 µg/L benzophenone-3 (oxybenzone) was tested.

The life-cycle of reef-building corals, as is true for many benthic marine invertebrates, includes a planktonic larval phase that is critical to the maintenance of adult populations. Interest in understanding the biology of this larval phase has take

The upside-down jellyfish Cassiopea is a globally distributed, semi-sessile, planktonically dispersed scyphomedusa. Cassiopea occurs in shallow, tropical inshore marine waters on sandy mudflats and is generally associated with mangrove-dominated habi

Scyphopolyps of Cassiopea andromeda propagate asexually by forming larva-like buds which separate from the parent in a developmentally quiescent state. These buds metamorphose into sessile polyps when exposed to specific biogenic, chemical inducers.

In the metagenetic life-cycle of the scyphozoan Cassiopea xamachana metamorphosis of planula-larvae or larva-like buds to polyps is triggered by specific external cues which are transmitted inside the larva or bud where internal signals finally coord

Summary Two populations of the conspicuous, semi-sessile medusae of the rhizostome genus Cassiopea, both morphologically similar to Cassiopea andromeda from the Red Sea and Indopacific, were recently studied on Oahu (Hawai'i), one from a sheltered sa

Heteroxenia fuscescens is a common zooxanthellate soft coral on the shallow reefs in the Gulf of Eilat, northern Red Sea. In the Red Sea, during its prolonged planulation, H. fuscescens is subjected to a seasonal environmental regime that alternates

Summary During the life cycle of marine invertebrates, including corals with benthic and planktonic phases, embryogenesis leads to a free swimming larva which has to find a suitable habitat to settle and metamorphose. Initial settlement and induction

By using TPA (12-tetra-decanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate) an artificial inducer for metamorphosis, it was possible to determine the effect of crude oil on settlement and metamorphosis of planulae of the soft coral Heteroxenia fuscescens . In the absence of
