Interpreting computations in the visual cortex as learning and inference in a generative model of the environment has received wide support both in neuroscience and cognitive science. However, hierarchical computations, a hallmark of visual cortical

The existence of a well defined yield stress, where a macroscopic piece of crystal begins to plastically flow, has been one of the basic observations of materials science. In contrast to macroscopic samples, in micro- and nanocrystals the strain accu

Numerical studies of dislocation pair correlations have played a central role in deriving a continuum theory from the equations of motion of 2D dislocation systems in a mathematically rigorous way. As part of an effort to extend this theory into the

We study the relaxation dynamics of systems of straight, parallel crystal dislocations, starting from initially random and uncorrelated positions of the individual dislocations. A scaling model of the relaxation process is constructed by considering

The running of the strong coupling constant, $R_{e^+e^-},R_Z$ and $R_\tau$ is studied on the three-loop level. Based on experimental data of $R_{e^+e^-},R_Z$ and $R_\tau$ and the LEP multijet analysis, the light gluino scenario is excluded to 99.97%

We study the finite-temperature electroweak phase transition by numerical simulations of the four-dimensional SU(2)-Higgs model on anisotropic lattices with temporal extension $L_t=2$. The physically interesting parameter region of Higgs masses near

Recent results of four-dimensional (4d) lattice simulations on the finite temperature electroweak phase transition (EWPT) are discussed. The phase transition is of first order in the SU(2)-Higgs model below the end point Higgs mass 66.5$\pm$1.4 GeV.
