Galvanotaxis describes the functional response of organisms to electric fields. In ciliates, the electric field influences the electrophysiology, and thus, the cilia beat dynamics. This leads to a change of the swimming direction toward the cathode.

Eleven morphospecies belonging to seven different genera (Coleps, Vorticella, Halteria, Spirostomum, Loxodes, Cyclidium, and Euplotes) of free-living ciliates were recorded for the first time in Cacalotenango fall in Guerrero state, Mexico. Coleps hi

Trait variation among heterospecific and conspecific organisms may substantially affect community and food web dynamics. While the relevance of competition and feeding traits have been widely studied for different consumer species, studies on intrasp

Summary Diversity of small protists was studied in sulfidic and anoxic (euxinic) stratified karstic lakes and coastal lagoons by 18S rRNA gene analyses. We hypothesized a major sulfide effect, reducing protist diversity and richness with only a few s

Ciliates are unicellular eukaryotic microorganisms that express their behaviour by motion. In this study, the authors attempt to address the question of whether locomotion could reflect evolutionary history or whether it instead depends on cell geome

Interface zones between oxic and anoxic water masses (pelagic redoxclines) host highly active prokaryotic communities, mediating important biogeo- chemical transformations. However, for marine pelagic redoxclines almost no knowledge exists on the mag

Recent studies have revealed that the "lower" marine ciliates are far more diverse than previously suspected. During a survey on the ciliate fauna in coastal waters of Qingdao, northern China, we have isolated about 30 new or poorly known taxa. In th

Problem statement: Since there is no evidence to identify present spec ies in the Bukan dam reservoir, therefore, this study was conducted to provide background for fisheries purposes. Approach: The abundance and species composition of ciliates were
