A series of substituted benzoyl radicals has been generated by laser flash photolysis of alpha-hydroxy ketones, alpha-amino ketones, and acyl and bis(acyl)phosphine oxides, all of which are used commercially as photoinitiators in free radical polymer

Fast time-resolved step-scan FT-IR (s2–FT-IR) has been used to study excited states and reaction intermediates in conventional and supercritical solvents. We have developed a four-port IR cell for s2–FT-IR measurements. The generation of W(CO)5(X

A series of M(η5-C5R5)(CO)2(C5H10) complexes (R = H, Me or Ph; M = Mn or Re) have been characterised at low (Re only) and room temperature (R = H only) using infrared spectroscopy. The decay rates of these complexes have been measured and compared t

We report broadband quantum cascade lasers emitting over a range of 6 to 8 mum at 77 K and having Jth=4.6 kA/cm2 at 300 K. Superluminescent diodes utilizing the same design will also be described.

The world's first mid-infrared optical coherence tomography (MIR-OCT) system is introduced. It utilizes custom-built quantum cascade lasers as broadband MIR sources and has been designed to characterize the structure and biochemical content of bioeng

Infrared spectroscopy has been used to characterise the folded and unfolded states of bovine ubiquitin (a small protein of 76 residues) under acidic conditions (pH ∼1); fast time-resolved measurements of protein unfolding, initiated by a laser-indu

The amide I carbonyl stretch in the IR spectrum, together with 1H NMR Hα chemical shifts, have been used to investigate the folding of a 16-residue β-hairpin peptide in water: while Hα shifts are consistent with a significant population of the fol
