The magnetic anisotropy in Co films epitaxially grown on Cu(001) is investigated by measuring magneto-optical Kerr hysteresis loops during film growth. As a function of Co thickness the magnetic anisotropy oscillates with a period of 1 monolayer. The

Spin-polarized low-energy electron diffraction combined with in situ Kerr magnetometry and a model calculation indicates that a six monolayer thick fcc Fe film undergoes a reversible transition from a room-temperature paramagnetic state to a low-temp

The magnetic anisotropy of Co films grown on stepped Cu(100) substrates is found to oscillate with varying Cu overlayer thickness. We relate these oscillations to the occurrence of quantum well states in the Cu overlayer.

WHEN a system is poised at a critical point between two macroscopic phases, it exhibits dynamical structures on all available spatial scales, even though the underlying microscopic interactions tend to have a characteristic length scale. According to

Ultrathin ferromagnetic films of Co, grown on a stepped Cu(100) substrate, exhibit shifted magnetization curves. We calculate the shift field of a film consisting of N planes. Our model includes a four-fold bulk anisotropy k/sub 4/, a uniaxial anisot

We provide experimental proof that atomically thin films of ferromagnetic Fe grown by molecular beam epitaxy on top of a non-magnetic W(1 1 0)-substrate obey the scaling hypothesis and belong to the 2D-Ising universality class.

When metals are structured on nanometre length scales, their electrons are subject to confinement effects: the response of a confined electron gas is governed by Friedel oscillations1 of the electron density and Rudermann–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida o

The magnetic anisotropy in Co films epitaxially grown on Cu(100) is found to oscillate as a function of the Co thickness. The oscillation period corresponds to one monolayer, as revealed by measuring magneto-optical Kerr hysteresis loops during film
The static magnetic susceptibility of subnanometer thick Co and Fe films at the Curie temperature is enhanced by four orders of magnitude with respect to bulk samples.

We investigate multilayered structures consisting of two Co-films separated by a Cu(1 0 0)-wedge. The exchange coupling contains oscillations with wavelengths A ≈ 5.5 ML and λ ≈ 2.4 ML. When the wedge-like structure is grown at room temperature,
