Cardiac glycosides (CGs) are useful drugs to treat cardiac illnesses and have potent cytotoxic and anticancer effects in cultured cells and animal models. Their receptor is the Na+,K+ ATPase, but other plasma membrane proteins might bind CGs as well.

We provide a kinetic characterization of (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity in a posterior gill microsomal fraction from the grapsid crab Goniopsis cruentata. (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity constitutes 95% of total ATPase activity, and sucrose density centrifugati

We examined the effects of exogenous dopamine on gill (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity in vitro in microsomal preparations from juvenile or adult freshwater shrimp, Macrobrachium amazonicum. Dopamine had no effect on enzyme activity in juveniles but stimula

Flight dispersal represents a key aspect of the evolutionary and ecological success of insects, allowing escape from predators, mating, and colonization of new niches. The huge energy demand posed by flight activity is essentially met by oxidative ph

The gill (Na+, K+)-ATPase is the main enzyme that underpins osmoregulatory ability in crustaceans that occupy biotopes like mangroves, characterized by salinity variation. We evaluated osmotic and ionic regulatory ability in the semi-terrestrial mang

We analyzed the modulation by exogenous FXYD2 peptide and by endogenous protein kinases A and C, and Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent kinase, of gill (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity in the semi-terrestrial mangrove crab Ucides cordatus after 10-days acclimation t

Aiming to clarify the mechanism of inhibition of (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity by polyamines, we examined the effects of exogenous putrescine, spermidine, and spermine on the kinetic behavior of phosphoenzyme-linked partial reactions using a microsomal g

There is a renewed interest in the Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA, EC 3.6.3.9) either as a target for new therapeutic uses or for understanding the putative pathophysiological role of its mammalian endogenous ligands. Recent data indicate that bufalin binds to t

Cisplatin and other platinum-containing drugs have played a crucial role in anticancer treatments for over 30 years. However, treatment with cisplatin may cause serious side effects, such as myelosuppression, nausea, ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and
