The organic matter (OMD) and cell wall (CWD) digestibility of stalks of 25 different maize samples were determined in an in vitro assay using rumen fluid. The stalk OMD and CWD varied between 62-80% and 44-62%, respectively. The free phenolic acids f

Four types of wheat plant material i.e., seedlings, coleoptile segments, anther-derived callus and anther-derived embryos, were tested at different concentrations of deoxynivalenol (DON) and 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-ADON). DON inhibited growth of al

Crosses were made among ten winter wheat genotypes representing different levels of resistance to Fusarium head blight to obtain F1 and F2 generations. Parents, F1 and F2 were inoculated with one strain of Fusarium culmorum. Data on incidence of head

During a four year period, a total of 258 winter and spring wheat genotypes were evaluated for resistance to head blight after inoculation with Fusarium culmorum strain IPO 39-01. It was concluded that genetic variation for resistance is very large.

An infection of bread wheat by fusarium head blight contaminates the crop with mycotoxins, particularly deoxynivalenol (DON) and nivalenol (NIV). The toxicity and natural occurrence of these mycotoxins in wheat are reviewed. Based on 8 years data of

The state of the art in Fusarium head blight resistance research is reviewed with reference to breeding for genetic resistance to Fusarium in wheat in practice. Fusarium graminearum and F. culmorum produce the trichothecene mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (

In the European coastal dunes, marram grass (Ammophila arenaria) is planted in order to control sand erosion. In the years 1986 to 1991, workers on the Wadden islands in the Netherlands planting marram grass showed lesions of skin and mucous membrane

The stalk fraction of recombinant inbred lines of maize (RILs), harvested shortly before silage stage, was used to determine genetic variation for organic matter digestibility (OMD) and cell wall digestibility (CWD) as well as variation for fibre con

Organic matter and cell wall degradation (OMD and CWD) are important quality traits of maize which may be estimated by in vitro assays using rumen fluid. However, these assays have some large disadvantages which stimulate research for alternative met
